Today, I can't help but giggle to myself while carrying out my ordinary tasks. What do you imagine when you think of a courtesan? Personally, I envision a girl in stiletto high heels, a very short skirt, heavy makeup, and for some reason, a furry coat strolling along the sidewalk, chewing gum, and saying "hey baby." LOL. Now, when you think of your mother, the image is probably quite different.
Recently, my son (who is old enough to understand adult matters) came into the kitchen and said, "you've ruined it for me." I stared at him blankly, unsure of what I had ruined for him this time. Perhaps it was something terrible like buying too many fruits and vegetables or making him go to school. You know, all the ways us mothers deviously conspire to ruin our children's lives...
He exclaimed, "You've ruined what sex workers are!" I stood there in silence, my rubber gloves still wet from washing dishes, and all I managed to say was, "Well, good job on using 'sex worker' correctly." After a brief pause, I began to stumble over my words as he rummaged through the fridge, saying something like things portrayed in movies are not real. He retorted, "I know, and you've ruined it for me because," waving his hands at me, "you're just a mom and all your friends, (he was exasperated at this point) are just like you."
Another item on the list of things I have managed to ruin for my son can now be officially crossed off. Next up: influencing his music preferences, which I consider more of a public service. 😉
